Calligraphy Instagrammed - Jonathan Coulton 02 by MShades
Calligraphy Instagrammed - Jonathan Coulton 02
I decided to use song lyrics as practice material. I pretty much just hit "shuffle" on my iPod and picked the first few songs with lyrics that came up.

We all know people like this, don't we?

This was a very useful song to me in my younger years, especially during those whole "unrequited love" episodes. Sigh.

Not sure what happened with all that flourishing, but I think the Calligraphy Gods punished me with that final Roman N there...

I picked quadrata for this because of how the whole song kind of runs together into one long line. I think this script maintains that sense of urgency.

I have a massive bank of quotations, but if you have one that you think would look good in calligraphy, please let me know! I'm always up for something new...

Just wonder what pens you use: trying to get into it more and trying to find some good ones. I'd appreciate your input. Keep up the fantastic work!

Many thanks!

At the moment, I'm using Brause and Speedball dip nibs for nearly everything. I have some Pilot Parallels, but I don't use them nearly as often as I should. Any of those should suit you just fine, and there are plenty of good inks out there, too. I use mostly fountain pen inks, but India ink and document-grade ink works well too. I know some people also use gouache, but I haven't quite made that leap yet.

Good luck, and come visit the calligraphy subReddit. Lots of good information and help to be found there.

still need that inspiration? Here's something:

Since you seem to draw superheroes a lot, might I suggest Captain Qwark, the 'Greatest Superhero' (more like pathetic coward) the galaxy has ever known?

... just in case you don't know who that is, he is from the Ratchet & Clank videogame series. He's the guy in a green leotard with a giant letter Q on it.

again, this is just a suggestion. Mayhap he could be shown in his true colours (cowering at the hands of an enemy)
